Diagnostic of sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is one of the most common forms of breathing disorders. Obese, middle-aged, loudly and irregulagularly snoring men are the most commonly affected group of patients. Family members of the patient can observe apnea lasting up to 2 minutes. The pause in breathing ends with a loud, rapid snore, which is assiociated with short period of awakening (which is not remembered by the patient). Such pauses in breathing are often registered up 50-60 per hour.

Frequent apnea, frequent and deep hypoxia and increased sympathethic activity of the body lead to the developement of cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, cardiac arythmia, stroke). Frequent awakenings, on the other hand, lead to the developement of the phenomenon called defragmentation of the sleep, which leads to excessive daytime sleepiness and increased risk of traffic eccidents.
