Diabetology

Dabetology is a branch of medicine dealing with the treatment of diabetes and its complications. Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) resulting from defective production or action of insulin – a hormone exuded by cells in the pancreas. Chronic hyperglycemia is associated with damage to various organs, especially eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels. Due to the cause and course of the disease, diabetes can be divided into type 1 or 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and others.

The most common form of diabetes is the type 2, which consists of reduced sensitivity of tissues to insulin. It is one of the, so-called, lifestyle diseases, which incidence is unfortunately still growing. Untreated or poorly treated diabetes chronically damages the body of patient deteriorating general condition of his health, as well as the course of other comorbidities, such as coronary heart disease and hypertension. Therefore, it is important to treat such patients properly.
